Drum & Bass Arena Awards 2023 (Runner)

Drum and bass was never welcomed into my music libraries, mainly because I've spent years listening to my favourites genres on loop but also because I'd never delved into underground or non-mainstream music. I'm glad that this experience opened up my eyes and ears so that I could discover the (what seems like) endless talent within this industry bubble. You can view the video below:

I was contacted on a Thursday and was on set the following Monday. I was asked if I'd like to be a "runner on an upcoming shoot". There's something really unique and exciting about not knowing what I'm in for, other than assisting on a set. This was also the first time that somebody had reached out to me from having me on a set before so I must've done something right... right?

I arrived early, helped to move equipment into the location, asked around for tea/coffee orders and was ready to get into the shoot. I asked what we were shooting and was informed of the awards as well as upcoming artist interviews. My role would be to assist with anything needed on set and to also take behind the scenes photos for the crew. They told me "Becky" would be here soon so we needed to get everything prepared for the first interview of the day. I helped to put equipment up, clear the areas of unnecessary items, sat in on set for the crew to stage props and lights around me. Becky was here now but I couldn't see her too well behind the lights and without my glasses on. She approached me on the set where I was sitting and kindly introduced herself to me. I replied to say my name, role, and if she needed anything from me, then to give me a shout. As I sat there, I stopped for a second to process what was going on and realised that I recognised Becky. This was someone I'd definitely seen before. Then it all clicked. I mouthed to somebody next to me "is that Becky HILL?" and he laughed and nodded. I knew I'd be professional regardless, but I paused for a second as I had no prior ideas of what to expect from that day. The shoot started and I found myself watching the interview from behind one of the cameras. I knew instantly that this was something I was suited to and would thrive in. Just watching the shoot and learning techniques in real time was everything to me.

As the day went on, more guests were being interviewed as well as the main awards being revealed. I kept on top of the behind the scenes photography as well as any assistance somebody might call out for. I had a really active and long day but doing something that I love kept me feeling fine throughout the day. You might even hear me cheering as part of the "crowd" when awards get handed out. My tasks went from making a tea to walking a presenter's dog- It was great.

This shoot really helped me to affirm that this is what I want to do. I want to be around creatives who share the same OR similar passions with me. I found I could really have an in depth conversation about things I was actually interested in? And EVERYBODY was so helpful and friendly and welcoming so I could ask anything. It was a great day and I believe that the final video shows that.
