ENVY: Post-Production (Runner)

Here we are…going to my first careers fair really paid off. I believe that I manifested this placement and the universe finally listened to me after endless days feeling sorry for myself. At the fair, the workers directed me to the post-production section so that I could get a better understanding of what I wanted from it. I guess that I needed to have more of a plan than just saying I wanted to be an editor. ENVY stuck out to me the most- mainly because I was walking around with a bright silver tote bag that they’d given me- but also because they seemed to be the most friendly and passionate about the potential and chance of working with them. They were the first people I sent my CV and cover letter off to and filled out the work experience section. I remember writing that I had an interest in the shows they had edited like 'The Apprentice' and 'Little Mix: The Search'… I know- two Little Mix mentions in the last two posts- I’m stopping I promise… A week or two after that email was sent, I received a response congratulating me for landing a work experience placement. All I needed to do was select the week that would suit me the most and wait. On Monday the 24th of April, I started my week.

I was introduced to team members and was taken to my building where the kitchen, my main base was at Foley street which was about 10 minutes from the other buildings. To back-up my barista experience, not show-off, I made an oat flat white with a beautiful little feather on top. Impressive for my first drink right? Because I’m a signed off barista, I was able to speak to the team about the workflows and opportunities at ENVY rather than how to steam a latte. It was what I already do but in an environment that I want to be in, with people who share the same interests as me with added passion and approach to the industry. My job was under client services where I would serve the editors who work in the suites. They could call the kitchen and place an order for the runners to prepare and run down to them.

My first training session was in the MCR room in my building where I was talked through ingesting, mounting and loads of other words that I need to revisit. Throughout the weeks, I visited different MCRs and even sat at reception for a bit. Everybody at ENVY was so nice and easy to talk to which felt quite new to me. Having people who were willing to explain things in terms that I might understand was really helpful and I was learning so much as the week went on. AVID is the software that most post houses are using which means that I'm going to be on YouTube tutorial playlists a lot. The interesting part was that the editing house was a service for clients who bring their productions over. I have no idea why but I was under the impression that the place would have its own editors to create the sequences for producers who needed a show edited. Thinking about a career in this is, I believe the best route for me wold be to go into offline editing like I said from the start.

Taking a picture on my break because I had to show myself at least once...

Who knows what will happen next as I'm still applying everywhere I can but ENVY treated me really well and I'll be sure to apply when I can.
